Shree Babulnath Temple - Ancient Shiva Mandir (Mumbai)

Babulnath Temple is an old Shiva Mandir in Mumbai, India. It sits on a small hill near Girgaum Chowpatty and is one of the city's oldest temples.

* Closest railway station: Marine Lines (Western Railway).

The temple's Shiva Linga and idols were first set up in the 12th century by a local Hindu king named Bhimdev. Over time, the temple was buried and forgotten. The idols were rediscovered between 1700 and 1780, and the first temple was built in 1780.
When the idols were found, there were five in total: the main Shiva Linga, Ganesh, Hanuman, Parvati, and one more. The first four are still in the temple, but fifth one was immersed in the sea because it was broken when it was dug out in the 18th century. Today, the temple is very famous and is known for its blessings.

Legend: About 200 years ago, the southeast part of the hill known as Malabar Hill, where the temple is located, was owned by a rich goldsmith named Pandurang. His cattle grazed there, and Babul, who took care of the cattle, noticed that one cow named Kapila stopped giving milk. Babul told Pandurang that the cow seemed to stop milking at a certain spot, but he couldn’t explain why. Pandurang became curious and watched the cow the next day. He was amazed when he saw Kapila doing the same thing again. When Pandurang checked the spot, he found a large Shivalinga, It is the very place where the temple has been built.
